SACRAMENTO – Senator Chang (R-Diamond Bar) today applauded recent efforts by Governor Newsom to help parents find child care as the state prepares to gradually reopen. According to the governor’s office, his office has unveiled an online portal that ‘enables parents to enter their location and the type of care they need, instantly receiving a list of local center-based and family child care programs.’
“I have been advocating for parents impacted by COVID-19, so I am pleased to see the governor make this a special focus as we try to navigate this virus as a state, said Senator Chang. “Parents – including single parents – are really struggling to balance the stay-at-home orders, school closures, and working to support their family. They need all the support we can give them.”
Last month Senator Chang introduced the bipartisan SB 943 to ensure all parents have access to paid family leave benefits when their children are dismissed from school due to COVID-19. Ninety-nine percent of California’s 10,000 schools – responsible for the education of some 6 million students – have closed due to COVID-19.
Before the announcement of the child care portal, Senator Chang and the Legislative Women’s Caucus met with the Governor via Zoom to discuss how parents can be supported with child care needs.
