Sacramento, CA – Senator Ling Ling Chang (R-Diamond Bar) issued the following statement after the governor signed mental health bills SB 803, SB 855, AB 2112, and AB 2265 into law:
“Mental health is public health. I’m proud to have supported these measures and applaud my colleagues and the governor for taking action. I’m especially thankful the governor signed a bill I coauthored, establishing an Office of Suicide Prevention. With COVID-19 increasing the need for mental health services, it’s more important than ever to help Californians access care.”
About the legislation:
- SB 803 supports statewide standards for behavioral health Peer Support Specialists.
- SB 855 requires health plans and insurers to cover medically necessary treatment for mental health and substance use disorders.
- AB 2112 establishes an Office of Suicide Prevention to address the increasing suicide rates in California.
- AB 2265 clarifies that specified Mental Health Services Act funds can be used for treatment of substance abuse treatment and not just mental health care.
